In the work that I have done during this last semester, a lot of the projects have a common theme of emphasis. In my art I’ve used different techniques to achieve this, and they have lead to an overall theme in my work.
The four projects that show this theme the most are my bright landscape painting, puzzle landscape painting, Disney style painting, and macro-landscape painting. The bright landscape uses impressionist color, or it uses complementary colors to create a bright look in the mountains and trees. By using purples and reds instead of blacks it looks much brighter and more like natural light. In the puzzle landscape, based on a picture, I also used brighter colors to make it more lively, and added details and texture to the trees that were in the foreground. For the Disney style painting I turned an ordinary photo into a painting that looked like a Disney movie, or an Eyvind Earle painting. I used different shades of blue, dark blacks on the closest trees, and bright colors in the foreground to help show space. The last project was the macro-landscape painting, and for it I painted a dandelion with colored pencils mixed in to show man-made objects vs. nature. I used complementary colors to make the flowers stand out, and bright colors through it as well.
Due to the way I painted them, each of these paintings uses the common theme of emphasis. Whether it was because they used contrasting colors to make an area stand out, or texture to make it more detailed and separated, the important parts were emphasized. By doing this for each of these projects I learned how and when to use contrasting colors, where to put details and shading, and how to make my paintings look more realistic, which are all things that will help me in the future.
Each of these skills and the elements of color, texture, and most importantly emphasis help to show an overall idea in my paintings. Since they are all bright, almost as if they were all based on Disney or cartoons, and all have interesting parts to look at, they are very positive and give off a fun, charismatic feeling.
I have, and will continue to use these skills and techniques to build more themes and create more exciting paintings, drawings, or any other form of art in my future.
